Top-Ranked Accounting Schools in Pennsylvania

College rankings can be a useful tool to measure the overall reputation of a school or program. Weighing multiple rankings when evaluating your college choices can be helpful because different publishers may use different ranking factors in their methodologies. While the best program for your goals may rely on a combination of factors not typically considered in overall rankings, such as location or funding, seeing a program ranked on multiple lists can be a strong indication of reputation and academic quality.

Schools in Pennsylvania with Accounting Degrees

To give you an idea of the breadth and depth of accounting degrees offered in Pennsylvania, we have profiled select programs below. Be sure to visit the websites of programs of interest for more detailed information on courses, admissions requirements and deadlines, and faculty.

Undergraduate Accounting Programs

Saint Joseph’s University

Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) with a major in Accounting. The accounting program emphasizes the application of classroom knowledge to the real world, and students learn the skills necessary to succeed in the industry. The core classes of the degree cover the basics of financial and managerial accounting as well as accounting information systems and business ethics. This curriculum prepares graduates to continue their education and eventually sit for the CPA examination. SJU offers a 4+1 option through which students pursuing the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Accounting can apply their last year’s coursework to a Master of Professional Accountancy (MPA) degree. The MPA can also be pursued independently of the BS. For those who wish to take the CPA exam, a 36-credit post-baccalaureate certificate is available to fulfill the additional academic requirements.

University of Pennsylvania

The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Economics with a Concentration in Accounting. This program is built on a broad liberal arts foundation, and the general education requirements include mathematics, economics, finance, humanities, and behavioral and natural sciences. After accounting majors complete this core coursework, they can take accounting courses such as Accounting and Business Analysis; Valuation; and Financial Measurement and Disclosure. Penn also offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Accounting that can be completed in 20 months, including a summer internship. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting degree is also available, focusing on academic research.

University of Scranton

At the University of Scranton (Scranton), students can earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Accounting. Students start their general education with liberal arts course requirements before taking accounting classes, which emphasize finance and accounting concepts, theory, and their applications to everyday business. Accounting majors can choose from three tracks: general accounting, forensic accounting, or accounting analytics. Several minors are available as well, including Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, and Forensic Accounting. Scranton also offers two five-year combined programs–a Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Accounting and a BS and Master of Accountancy (MAcc). Both master’s degrees can be completed entirely online. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting is also available.

Graduate Accounting Programs

Duquesne University

At the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business at Duquesne University, students can earn a Master of Science in Accountancy (MAcc). This 30-credit graduate program can be completed in one year of daytime and evening courses, or in two years with just evening courses. The curriculum focuses on subjects like forensic accounting, financial reporting, information systems, and common ethical issues in the field. Students learn communication strategies and develop leadership skills through small, hands-on classes. Accounting courses include subjects such as Fraud Examination, Internal Audit, Contemporary Topics in Financial Reporting, and Non-Profit and Governmental Accounting. Through this curriculum, and in combination with an undergraduate degree, students earn the minimum 150 credit hours and learn the skills necessary to sit for the CPA examination. Duquesne also offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with an Accounting concentration as well as an Accounting Minor. Some students are eligible to complete both their BSBA and their MAcc in just three and a half years while completing an additional semester in a paid co-op with a major accounting firm.

University of Pittsburgh

The Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) offers a 30-credit Master of Science (MS) in Accounting. This program is ideal for those interested in pursuing leadership positions in financial and managerial accounting. Students complete the core curriculum, which includes classes in Forensic Accounting; Business Law; and Corporate Tax Accounting and Planning; before choosing electives within the business school. The coursework prepares students to sit for the CPA examination upon graduation. The MS program requires some accounting prerequisites, but students do not need to complete all of these fundamental courses before applying for the program. A 120-credit Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with a major in Accounting is available that focuses on an arts and sciences foundation. For students who have a non-accounting bachelor’s degree, an undergraduate Certificate in Accounting is available. In addition, there are two accounting-focused Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees: Accounting and Accounting and Business Analytics. A 15-credit Graduate Certificate in Accounting and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting are available as well.

Online Accounting Programs

Carlow University

Carlow University offers several accounting programs online, including a Bachelor of Science in Accounting for undergraduate students. This 120-credit-hour program offers an interactive online classroom atmosphere in which students will learn the fundamentals of accounting through coursework such as Accounting Information Systems and Auditing. Up to 90 credits can be transferred from another institution, allowing students to graduate in less than four years. An online graduate certificate is also available at Carlow in Fraud and Forensics. This certificate prepares students for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) certification. Several online master’s degrees are also available at Carlow, including a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) in Fraud and Forensics, a Master of Science (MS) in Accounting, and an MS in Fraud and Forensics.

Pennsylvania State University-World Campus

The 30-credit-hour curriculum includes courses such as Business Tax Planning Theory and Practice; Strategic Cost Management; Financial Reporting; and Auditing Theory and Practice. The coursework prepares graduates to sit for the CPA examination and fulfills the state’s educational licensure requirements. Students also have the option of pursuing two Graduate Certificates: one in Accounting, which can also apply to the MPA degree, and one in Accounting Foundations. The Accounting Foundations Certificate is intended for students who do not have an undergraduate degree in accounting, but wish to move into a role with more accounting-intensive work or even into an accounting master’s degree. All CPA candidates in Pennsylvania must complete at least 1,600 hours of experience in accounting that should be acquired over at least 12 months. The experience must be accumulated during the 60 months preceding the application date to qualify for a license. Experience may include areas such as attest, preparation of tax returns, financial advisory, management advisory, public accounting, and compilation. For more details on the experience requirement in Pennsylvania, visit SBOA’s website. All work must be supervised by a currently licensed CPA to qualify.

3. Pass the Uniform CPA Examination.

SBOA uses NASBA to administer the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Uniform CPA Exam application and testing process. Candidates who are qualified and prepared to take the exam may apply through the NASBA web portal. Pre-evaluation is also available for candidates who are not certain that their education qualifies to test. All four sections of the exam must be passed with a score of 75 or higher within an 18-month rolling period.

4. Apply for a license.

Once all other requirements have been met, candidates may submit the Certified Public Accountant Certification Application along with an application fee via the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS) portal. Verification of education and experience must be submitted as part of the application. Applicants must also submit state and federal criminal reference checks from any state where they have lived, studied, or worked in the past five years.

5. Receive a CPA license from SBOA.

Applicants can check the status of their license application on the PALS portal. Once SBOA has received and reviewed all required documentation, the license will be issued and will show up on the individual’s online PALS profile. Applicants cannot use the CPA title until the license is issued.
